Five killed, three injured after blast at China oil plant

Explosion ripped through warehouse in Anhui province on Sunday evening, state media reported

Five people were killed and three others injured after a blast set a factory warehouse in eastern China on fire, Chinese state media reported on Monday.

The explosion at the storage facility of a speciality oil plant in Anhui province’s city of Anqing was heard on Sunday evening at about 5.20pm, the state-run news agency Xinhua reported, citing city authorities.

The fire at the plant, owned by Wanhua Oil Products, was put out after three hours, the report said.

Rescuers managed to save three people, leaving five others trapped at the scene.

The five people were found early on Monday and all were confirmed dead.

Among the three rescued, two were receiving treatment in hospital while the third, with minor injuries, was discharged, according to the report.

Early monitoring showed no serious air pollution from the incident and measures were underway to deal with water pollution, it said.

The cause of the incident is under investigation, Xinhua said.
