An African tourist succumbed to Beijing’s searing heat on Thursday during a visit to Tiananmen Square, local media reported.

The 60-year-old, who was not named, complained of feeling dizzy as he strolled through the popular tourist site, Beijing Youth Daily reported on Friday.

As the temperature soared to 36 degrees Celsius, the man sought help from a police officer on patrol in the square, who in turn arranged for a medic to check on his condition.

The man was found to be suffering from high blood pressure and his body temperature was raised, both signs of heatstroke, the report said.

After sitting for a while in the shade, however, the man was able to go about his business.

The China Meteorological Administration on Friday maintained its orange level weather alert – the second in a three-tier scale – and advised people, especially the elderly, the sick and young children, to keep out of the midday sun and to avoid physical exercise.
