A Chinese businessman bought 5,000 bowls of spicy noodles for passers-by in the southwestern city of Chongqing after recovering a lost engagement ring.

The Guangzhou native surnamed Wang travelled to Chongqing on Sunday to propose to his girlfriend, but he left his bag, which contained the 3-carat diamond ring worth more than 300,000 yuan (US$44,900)) outside the noodle shop after stopping there for a meal, the Chongqing Morning Post reported.

A local resident picked up the bag and gave it to the manager of the restaurant, who later returned it to Wang.

In a letter posted at the shop on Monday, Wang said he was able to propose to his girlfriend, who accepted, thanks to the kindness of local people.

He decided to pay for 5,000 bowls of noodles – the average daily sales of the shop – to celebrate the engagement.

“Chongqing has the woman I love and so many nice people,” Wang’s letter continued. “I feel very honoured and happy.”

On Tuesday, people formed a 100-metre long queue outside the shop in downtown Chongqing for the free sour and spicy noodles.

“I think the story is really moving,” a local man told reporters after getting the food.

“Love is beautiful and people’s hearts are more beautiful.”
