A court has upheld a one-year jail term given to a man who slipped male hormone into a female work colleague’s food and drink, Chinese media reported.

Surveillance footage showed Zhou Chuanjie lacing the woman’s meals with methyltestosterone, a synthetic steroid.

Zhou was convicted of causing intentional injury in May and his conviction and sentence was upheld by a court in Chengdu in Sichuan province last Friday, the Procuratorial Daily reported.

Zhou said he contaminated the woman’s food as a joke and claimed he had only used vitamins, the Chengdu Economic Daily reported. The woman said it was an act of revenge, the report added, without giving details.

The woman, whose full name was not given, found last year that she started growing thicker body hair and her voice became lower pitched. She also stopped menstruating.

The hormones also caused serious liver damage, according to the Chengdu Economic Daily.

The woman was alerted by another colleague through a text message that Zhou had been putting steroids into her food for about six months, the Chengdu Economic Daily said.

She went to a hospital and was told she had higher than normal levels of male hormone in her body.

Police were called after checks of surveillance footage showed Zhou was behind the spiking of her food and drink.

He was charged last December.

No details were given in the reports of where the man and woman worked.
