Car rams into cattle in Hong Kong – and three cows who make narrow escape try to nudge awake their fallen friend
An eyewitness said the driver was speeding along South Lantau Road, which cuts through a part of Lantau Island where feral cows roam freely

A feral cow was killed and another was injured after a car rammed into them on southern Lantau Island on Tuesday afternoon.
Photos from a Facebook group set up by local residents showed one cow lying on the ground bleeding while three others surrounded it, as though they were trying to nudge it to get up. The cow, named Abby, according to the group, died at the scene.
The injured bovine was reportedly taken away by government veterinary surgeons for a check-up.
Police were called to South Lantau Road near Shui Hau village at 5pm, after the accident occurred. The car, a Volkswagen Golf, was heavily damaged. Its windscreen was smashed and airbags had been deployed.
An eyewitness at the scene told the Post the driver was a woman, who was driving at about 60km/h at the time of the accident – 10km/h above the road’s speed limit.
South Lantau Road, on southern Lantau, is only accessible by a special permit issued to local residents. It was not known whether the car was allowed to enter the area.

Feral cows are commonly sighted on Lantau and other parts of the New Territories, including Sai Kung.
Figures from the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) suggest Hong Kong is home to over 1,000 brown cattle.
