A Hong Kong Jockey Club work rider was fighting for his life on Tuesday after falling off a horse at Sha Tin Racecourse.

Emergency personnel were called to the racecourse on Tai Po Road shortly before 6am by a security guard, who reported the rider had come off the horse during a training ride.

The 39-year-old, surnamed Mok, suffered head injuries and was knocked unconscious, according to police.

He was taken to nearby Prince of Wales Hospital, where he remained in a critical condition. Police said initial investigation had found nothing suspicious about the fall.

“The club has contacted his family and will provide every possible assistance as needed,” a Jockey Club spokesman said.
