Hong Kong secondary school pupils have set a Guinness World Record for the largest display of a 3D-printed sculpture with a giant model of the harbourfront.
The 35 square metre creation comprises 1,214 3D-printed items and was made as part of the continuing 20th anniversary celebrations of the city’s return to Chinese rule.
Some 1,236 students from 123 secondary schools took part in the competition, organised by the Hong Kong Productivity Council. There were 236 entries with the top four receiving awards at an unveiling on Sunday.
Plan for a self-sustaining building on Hong Kong’s waterfront
Using computer-aided design software and advanced 3D printing technology, the teams redesigned and produced 20 landmark buildings on the north and south sides of Victoria Harbour.
The display included sculptures of the International Commerce Centre, International Finance Centre Two, the Court of Final Appeal Building, and the Convention and Exhibition Centre.
The top prize went to three Form Two pupils from Bethel High School for their 3D sculpture of the Shun Tak Centre and Hong Kong-Macau Ferry Terminal in Sheung Wan.
“It took us three months and three models before we got the perfect one,” said William Liu, 15, one of the winners. He said he was already planning his next project – a 3D model of his school.
The government hopes others will feel the same enthusiasm and pursue careers in technology.

“When they get involved in this competition, they’re not only copying they are thinking about how to redesign a lot of features,” council general manager Thomas Lee Kwok-keung said.
“After the whole process a lot of students said they liked technology, they like 3D printing. We hope a lot of students will go for technology courses instead of commerce.”
Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor and Secretary for Innovation and Technology Nicholas Yang Wei-hsiung were on hand to witness the prizes being handed out and Guinness World Record representatives presenting its award.
The display will be available for public viewing later this month at the council’s office in Kowloon Tong.
