Photos of a bleeding dog suspected to have been severely beaten on Friday night sparked outrage among Hong Kong internet users, who have raised HK$150,000 for surgery to save its life.
The photos were taken by an unidentified Facebook user in the early hours of Saturday and showed the animal lying on the ground with blood all around him in Wang Chau, Yuen Long.
They went viral instantly and a group of animal volunteers nearby rushed to the scene to rescue the dog - named Barry by internet users - and take him to a clinic in Ho Man Tin. A campaign was also launched to help raise money for his treatment.
One of the volunteers, Amanda Ho Min-ching, a 19-year-old student, said: "I wanted to cry when I first saw Barry in the clinic at 2am that day. The vet said his pelvis was fractured and he had internal bleeding. I don't understand why someone wants to do this. Why hit him?"
Ho said that although Barry was in visible pain, he showed no signs of giving up. "He is very well-behaved and I can tell he is fighting for his life," said Ho.
There was an outpouring of sympathy for Barry on the internet, and many wished him a speedy recovery.
By yesterday afternoon, another volunteer, Ollie Lee, reported on Facebook that HK$150,000 had been raised for Barry's surgery and she said further donations were not needed.
