A touching scene: Hong Kong cattle try to save bull hit by a car

A herd of cattle tried to rescue a cow which had just been knocked down on a main road in Ma On Shan. It later died.

The black bull was crossing Sai Sha Road near Sai Sha Cafe with about eight others at about 7.35am yesterday morning when a Sai Kung-bound four-wheel drive vehicle knocked it down.

The collision left the cow with a broken front right leg. It fell on its side, spilling blood.

The 33-year-old female driver stopped and called the police for assistance.

The herd was seen surrounding the fallen cow, rubbing it with their faces.

With the animals blocking the road, some motorists tooted their horns to try to scare them away, but they refused to budge.

Officers from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals arrived at the scene, but were unable to save the animal.

A witness told journalists that he was touched by the scene as the cattle tried to push the injured cow with their heads.

“They wanted to help but it was no use. It’s tragic … They stayed at its side, encouraging it to move.”

The witness said some drivers left their vehicles but were wary about approaching the herd.

Police later dispersed the cattle and Food and Environmental Hygiene Department officers removed the dead cow.

The case was categorised as a traffic accident with damage. The only injury to the car was a dent on its front.
