Amber rainstorm warning cancelled but Hong Kong is set to face a weekend of squally showers

The Hong Kong Observatory cancelled the amber rainstorm signal at 6.50pm on Friday, after issuing it over two hours earlier to alert the public to continued heavy rain and flooding in low-lying areas.
It also forecast a wet weekend for the city, with occasional squally showers and thunderstorms. There might be occasional strong gusts of wind offshore and on high ground, it said, adding that the temperature would range between 26 and 30 degrees Celsius.
Rain pelted down on the city for the large part of Friday afternoon, prompting the weather agency to issue the amber rainstorm signal at 4.15pm.
The third thunderstorm warning for the day was broadcast at 3.30pm and remained in force on Friday evening, together with typhoon standby signal No 1. The typhoon signal was issued on Thursday evening as a tropical depression edged closer to the city.
On Friday, the agency said: “At 7pm, the tropical depression over the northern part of the South China Sea was estimated to be about 370km southwest of Hong Kong and is forecast to move north-northeast slowly, lingering around the seas off the coast of western Guangdong.”
It added: “According to the present forecast track, the tropical depression will maintain a distance from Hong Kong tonight and the chance of issuing the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 before midnight is relatively low.”
