One more airport staff member was confirmed to be infected with measles on Sunday, bringing the total number of people affected by the contagious disease in Hong Kong this year to 56.

The latest case was a 30-year-old man who worked in Viet’s Choice, a restaurant in Terminal 2 of Hong Kong International Airport.

The 56 measles cases recorded so far this year have been nearly four times the 15 cases in the whole of last year. Of them, 26 involved airport or airline personnel.

Hong Kong’s Centre for Health Protection said the latest man, who had good past health, developed fever on Thursday and rash the next day.

He visited a private doctor on Thursday and the accident and emergency department of North Lantau Hospital the same day. On Friday, he was admitted to Princess Margaret Hospital in Kwai Chung for treatment.

A laboratory test found that the man’s respiratory specimen was positive for the measles virus.

The man, who was not born in Hong Kong and claimed to have had the measles vaccination, had been in a stable condition.

He did not travel anywhere during the incubation period – the time between infection and the appearance of symptoms – and the period when he would have been able to spread the virus.

Measles vaccination for airport staff continues. So far, more than 7,900 people have received jabs since the service at the airport began around two weeks ago.
