Hong Kong endured a third straight day of wet and miserable conditions on Saturday, with the weekend set to be a washout, as forecasters warned worse weather was on the way next week.

The Hong Kong Observatory said an easterly airstream of unsettled weather was affecting coastal areas of Guangdong province and also Hong Kong.

A mix of showers and pollution had also caused visibility levels to drop to 5,000 metres (16,500 feet) in Victoria Harbour. Depending on the weather system, typical visibility levels would be between 10km and 20km.

Sunday was forecast to be cloudy with showers and a few thunderstorms.

The unsettled weather would intensify by Tuesday, including particularly heavy rain, observatory scientific officer Law Hiu-fai said.

“Under the influence of troughs of low pressure, there will be thundery showers over southern China in the next couple of days. Showers will be heavy over the region on Tuesday. An active southerly airstream is expected to bring showers to southern China in the latter part of next week,” he added.

By Saturday afternoon, pollution levels across Hong Kong were classed as “moderate”, on the low end of the air quality index.
