A Hong Kong taxi driver has been arrested on suspicion of pocketing more than HK$1 million (US$127,400) left in his vehicle by a passenger.
The 59-year-old woman, who owns a money changer shop in Yuen Long, took a taxi home from work at about 7.40pm on Sunday and did not realise she had forgotten a bag containing HK$1.1 million in cash until after she reached her home in Tsing Lung Tau.
She managed to contact the 57-year-old cabby, whom she had hired through a taxi call centre, but he said he did not know anything about the item.
The woman approached police at about midnight.
Officers located the driver with information provided by the call centre. He was arrested in Tin Shui Wai at about 4pm on Monday.
Senior Inspector Tim Wong Wing-hung of the Tuen Mun district crime squad said the cabby told police he had not seen the money. The driver claimed that he had picked up more passengers subsequently and that one of them may have taken the bag.
But officers found all of the money in the cabby’s house in Ha Pak Nai in Yuen Long.
The driver was detained after being arrested for theft and misleading police.
