A security guard was found dead in a 127-year-old building in Hong Kong on Monday.

Emergency personnel were called to the Sai Ying Pun Community Complex on High Street in Sai Ying Pun shortly before 9.30am when the man, 56, was found by a colleague lying unconscious on a staircase.

The victim was certified dead at the scene, according to police.

A police spokesman said initial investigation showed the man had an illness and there were no suspicious circumstances.

An autopsy will be carried out to ascertain the cause of the death.

Police said the man had been working the night shift in the community complex on Sunday. The incident came to light about two hours after he was reported missing by a member of his family.

The complex is housed in a historic building, nicknamed High Street Haunted House, which is a popular place for ghost hunting in the city.

Built in 1892, it was originally a nurses’ dormitory, and was then occupied by the Japanese during the second world war. After the war it became a mental hospital, until it was abandoned in the 1970s. It was converted to its present function in 2001.
