A 70-year-old woman died on Sunday after she was knocked down by a car in Wong Tai Sin – the second road death of an elderly Hongkonger in two days.

The accident happened at about 11am on Ming Fung Street in Tsz Wan Shan.

The driver reportedly mistook the accelerator for the brake and rammed into the victim as she was crossing the street with her husband and son.

The woman was left trapped between the vehicle and a railing. Police said she sustained multiple injuries and was unconscious when paramedics arrived. She was taken to Kwong Wah Hospital in Yau Ma Tei and certified dead about half an hour later.

A police spokesman said the 41-year-old driver had been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death and was being detained for questioning on Sunday evening.

The incident was the second road fatality in 48 hours. On Saturday an 83-year-old woman was hit and killed by a truck at the junction of Fir Street and Fuk Tsun Street in Tai Kok Tsui at 1.30pm.

She was left trapped underneath the vehicle and had to be rescued by firefighters before she died.

The driver, 65, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death.
