Police launched a citywide manhunt on Friday for two Mandarin-speaking women who lured a local man to the stairs of a Hong Kong shopping centre with the promise of sex and stole his HK$17,000 (US$2,165) gold necklace.

An initial police investigation found that the 65-year-old man had his underpants and trousers lowered when his gold necklace was snatched at the staircases of PopCorn shopping centre on Tong Tak Street in Tseung Kwan O soon after 12.30pm.

Police were called after receiving a report from the victim. Officers combed the area, but no arrests were made.

According to police, one of the suspects is about 1.55 metres tall with long hair. She was wearing a pink top, black shorts, white sports shoes and carrying a shoulder bag at the time of the incident. The other woman is about 1.6 metres tall and also with long hair.

Police said the man met the women on Tong Tak Street outside the shopping centre shortly before 12.30pm.

“Police were told the man was promised sex for HK$150 [US$19]and then taken to the rear staircase of the shopping centre, where he was robbed,” the source said.

He said the tactic of lowering the man’s trousers could have given the two suspects enough time to escape.

Officers from Tseung Kwan O criminal investigation unit were assigned to the case. As of 6pm, no one had been arrested.

Last month, there were at least two reports of theft in which women used the lure of sex to trap their targets.

On April 24, a woman lured a 69-year-old man to a guest house in Mong Kok with the promise of sex. She stole his HK$80,000 watch and HK$900 in cash when he went to toilet.

On April 30, a 62-year-old man was lured to a guest house in Tsuen Wan under similar circumstances before his HK$20,000 gold necklace and HK$600 in cash were stolen.

According to latest statistics, police handled 6,579 reports of theft in the first four months of this year, down 7.6 per cent from 7,119 cases over the same period last year.
