An 85-year-old passenger died after the private car he was in lost control, mounted the pavement and rammed into a bus stop in Hong Kong’s Kowloon Bay area on Sunday.

Two others in the car and four pedestrians were also hurt in the accident, according to police.

The vehicle lost control at around 2.30pm and crashed into a bus stop near Lower Ngau Tau Kok Estate, police said.

The silver Honda hatchback first crashed into advertising displays at the bus stop, and then the vehicle’s rear hit a metal pole before coming to a halt.

The elderly passenger was brought to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Yau Ma Tei and then pronounced dead at around 4pm.

The female driver, 47, was later arrested for dangerous driving causing death and was being detained for further inquiries.

Two advertising board cases were completely shattered in the accident, with broken glass covering the pavement.

The front of the car was badly damaged, with the bumper missing and the bonnet and front left wing buckled.

The pedestrians received first aid on the roadside.

The injured were taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital and United Christian Hospital in Kwun Tong for treatment. Police said initial reports indicated they suffered from minor injuries.

An investigation by police’s Kowloon East traffic unit was ongoing.

Anyone with information about the crash was urged to contact investigating officers at 2305 7500 or 2305 7570.
