A man has been arrested in connection with the death of a security guard, who was attacked during a break-in at a Hong Kong restaurant last week.

The 28-year-old unemployed man was arrested outside his home in Ngau Tau Kok on Wednesday, a week after he allegedly broke into two Chinese restaurants in the Yen Sheng Centre in Kwun Tong.

Roughly HK$50,000 was stolen from one of the restaurants in the building on Hoi Yuen Road on December 11, and the victim, a 65-year-old man, was reportedly hit on the head with a hammer during the incident.

The guard was found tied up on a staircase after 4am under some disassembled cardboard boxes, lying in a pool of blood. He was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Yau Ma Tei, but died on Saturday.

A hammer and a crowbar were recovered at the scene, a police source said, and officers are investigating if they were used in the attack.

The suspect remained in police custody on Thursday night, and had not been charged. Police say they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

In Hong Kong, reports of burglary increased sharply between July and October with the city gripped by more than six months of violent street protests, sparked by opposition to the now-withdrawn extradition bill.

While the number of crimes reported between January and October dropped 0.7 per cent to 45,334, offences such as burglary rose. Figures showed burglary reports climbed by 31.7 per cent to 1,690 in the first 10 months of this year.
