A Hong Kong taxi driver has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving after a collision left an elderly cyclist in hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The 57-year-old cabby was linked to a crash involving his vehicle, the 76-year-old cyclist and another taxi on Monday morning.

Police and paramedics were called to the junction of Shap Pat Heung Road and Tai Tong Road in Yuen Long, just after 5am.

“A taxi driven by a 57-year-old man was suspected of failing to brake in time and ramming into the bicycle and the other cab which followed a traffic signal to stop,” police said in a statement.

Police said the cyclist suffered head injuries and was sent to Tuen Mun Hospital, where he was in a critical condition.

The two taxi drivers suffered minor neck injuries and were treated at Pok Oi Hospital in Yuen Long, before being discharged.

According to police, the 57-year-old passed a breathalyser test, but was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm by dangerous driving.

Official figures for the first five months of the year show 560 people suffered serious injuries in 524 road accidents across the city.

Between January and May, 49 people died in 48 traffic accidents. In 2019, 113 people died in 107 road accidents.
