Thirty-two mainland tourists hurt as their bus rolls down Macau road into Chinese medicine shop

Thirty-two tourists from the mainland, including several children, were injured when the tourist bus they were in rolled down a road and ploughed into a Chinese medicine shop in Macau on Monday afternoon.

Three women suffered serious injuries and were feeling dizzy after the crash happened shortly before 3pm, according to Macau’s fire department.

Initial investigations showed the bus stopped on a sloping road - Rua da Entena - near Kiang Wu Hospital, the department spokesman said.

It is understood the driver was not on board the vehicle at the time of the incident and its handbrake had not been engaged when he left the vehicle.

“Initial investigations showed the vehicle rolled forward, mounted the pavement and rammed into the Chinese medicine store,” the spokesman said.

He said no passers-by were hit in the incident and no one from the Chinese medicine clinic was hurt.

“All the injured were passengers from the tourist bus. Three women suffered serious injuries while the others suffered minor injuries,” the spokesman said, adding that most suffered injuries to their limbs.

Some medical staff from Kiang Wu Hospital ran out to offer initial treatment to the injured before firemen and paramedics arrived.

All the injured – 12 males and 20 females aged from seven to 73 – were taken to Kiang Wu Hospital and Hospital Conde S. Januario for treatment, according to the fire department.

Macau police are investigating the cause of the crash.
