A 79-year-old Hong Kong man was arrested on Thursday on suspicion of raping a 19-year-old mentally disabled woman in a local public housing estate.

The incident happened in Cheung Wah Estate in Fanling on Sunday.

The woman was taken to the estate as her mother worked in the area.

An initial investigation showed the woman was taken to the staircase of a public housing block in the estate where she was raped.

The case came to light on Monday when the victim returned to a work centre for the mentally disabled, where she described what had happened to her.

Police pored over security camera footage to gather information.

Officers arrested the elderly suspect on Thursday during a raid of his flat in the same building where the rape was said to have taken place.

It was understood the incident happened while the suspect’s wife was at home.

On Thursday night, the suspect was being held for questioning and no charge had been laid.

Detectives from Tai Po Police district were handling the case.
