A Hong Kong man died on Friday after he passed out while hiking in a country park in Hong Kong on Friday.

Rescuers airlifted the 66-year-old to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital in Chai Wan, but he was later certified dead.

The man, who was thought to have had an illness, was among a group of six hikers – three men and three women – who set off from Ma On Shan to Sai Kung at about 12 noon.

A police spokesman said the group reached Tai Shui Tseng in Ma On Shan Country Park soon after 2pm.

There, “the man complained of breathing difficulties and one of his friends made an emergency call”, he said.

Two fire engines and two ambulances went to the scene and a government helicopter was also sent. According to police, the man was unconscious when firefighters found him after 3pm.
