Annie Leung Hau-yi had a very fruitful day last Saturday.

“I picked a Chinese radish that had two legs,” the primary pupil announced, her face beaming with joy.

A large aubergine was also in the eight-year-old’s harvest basket.

Leung’s grandmother, surnamed Chan, said the plants looked delicious.

“We will have a feast tonight,” the 74-year-old said.

The pair and their family were among the 20 beneficiaries of the charity ChickenSoup Foundation’s services, and had been invited to experience a “green journey” at a hotel in Tuen Mun.

They visited a farm run by staff of the Hong Kong Gold Coast Hotel and got a taste of hands-on growing.

The hotel, which is a member of the Sino Group, has put a lot of work into promoting sustainable lifestyles. It has carried out projects to reduce consumption of single-use plastic and turn used things into construction materials.

Alexander Ng Win-yew, the group’s general manager, said his team wanted to encourage the city’s next generation to adopt green habits.

“It’s a big part of our goal in running the eco-farming project,” he said.

“It also helps build family harmony as children and their elder family members can have fun together on our farm.”

Besides green projects, the group has worked on initiatives related to art, heritage and care.

This year, in addition to a donation, the company has pledged a range of items, such as hotel packages, dining vouchers, champagne and wine, for a charity auction to help raise funds for the year-end campaign.
