Amid the crackle of vinyl records and the nostalgia of Cantonese golden oldies, Holy Lee Hau-yin, a Hong Kong mother of three young children, is spinning a new narrative as a professional disc jockey and turning a page on her troubled past.
After suffering an abusive marriage and the exhaustion of a decade of childcare, Lee will spend Mother’s Day on Sunday with renewed hope. The 28-year-old is set to perform for a private event at The Peninsula Hong Kong hotel and ultimately hopes to make a living from it.
Such an opportunity was once unimaginable for the full-time mother, who said she had mostly spent her prime years caring for her children, now aged 10, eight and six.
“At that time, I felt so trapped in the reality that I had three children, and that I had to bear the full responsibility for them and make them my priority no matter what,” said Lee, who is recovering from a long history of borderline personality disorder.
Relying on a cocktail of medication to manage her emotions for 14 years until 2024, she recounted a dark episode during her first pregnancy – when she was 19 years old – that turned her life around and made her commit to caring for a life she brought into the world.
“That was the first time I wanted to commit suicide. I already went up to the roof. But then, I felt the baby kicking in my womb,” she said.
The moment made Lee realise that being a parent was a responsibility that she would have to carry for life.

But her mental health was exacerbated by her ex-husband’s drug addiction and gambling problems, causing her deep distress when she was pregnant with her third child in 2021.
Although divorce appeared to be the most reasonable choice, Lee said she could not make herself walk away as her partner threatened to hurt the children if she left him.
“I knew the relationship was toxic. But at that moment, I felt helpless. All I could do was – get up, take care of the kids and sleep. And so passed another day,” she said.
In 2023, social workers referred Lee for therapy at the ChickenSoup Foundation, a charity supporting impoverished families in crisis.
Its founder, former investment banker Edward Man Ho-wai, set up a social enterprise called the Club Soul Good in Sham Shui Po the following year. There, Man discovered a vinyl store nearby and began collecting records.
He inspired Lee to listen to the Cantopop classics and encouraged a few mothers, including Lee, to develop an interest in disc jockeying.
Man further gave them a push and made her realise that being a DJ could be a viable profession.
“It is one of the many steps that made her see a glimmer of hope,” he said.
At the charity, which serves more than 100 families in need, Lee met two other mothers who had also gritted their teeth through similar hardships.
May Chen Meixiang, 52, was at her lowest point when she gave birth to her first daughter 16 years ago.
Spiralling into post-partum depression, Chen contemplated killing her newborn when she found out her ex-husband had sold their valuable items to a pawn shop to feed his gambling habit.
The once affluent and career-driven woman had to pay off his debts twice while raising the two children. Her younger son just turned eight this year.
But now she had found her purpose in volunteering at the charity.
“I want to share my experience and accompany families who might not feel comfortable sharing their pain and struggle at first,” Chen said.

The other mother Lee met was Carrie Lam, 31, whose world was turned upside down in 2020, when a car accident killed her husband on their youngest son’s second birthday.
After the accident, the former saleswoman felt the “the weight of the world was on her shoulders” as she suddenly became a single parent to raise three young children, she recalled.
Not only did she have to deal with her own emotions, but she also had to handle her eldest son’s reaction to the death of his father.
The thought of sending the three children to foster care had crossed her mind multiple times as she felt that she had failed them.
“Sometimes I hid in my room to cry. One time, my daughter quietly came to me and gave me a tissue. She wiped away my tears,” Lam said.
“Then, she went to the kitchen and came back with a glass of water. She held the glass close to my lip and fed me, just like how I fed her when she was little.”
That moment fundamentally changed Lam’s mind – she knew her children needed her and that she had to carry on living for them.
The three mothers crossed paths at the charity and bonded over their shared difficulties. Now, with the DJ project growing bigger, they hope to tap into the business of vinyl-themed event planning.
Man guided them on how to build a profitable business, as well as manage, promote and produce an event.
Lee, Chen, Lam and two other mothers have taken on different duties to bring the show to life at bars and luxury hotels. They tested the waters at pop culture festival ComplexCon Hong Kong over the past two years.
Recently, a local business leader booked them for tens of thousands of Hong Kong dollars to organise a vinyl night for about 100 guests at The Peninsula hotel.
Lee said that even after two years as a DJ, she still gets cold feet. But the satisfaction comes from seeing the audience drawn into the moment and engaged with her music.
“I want to be a role model to my children … you have to give things a shot,” she said. “You never know until you try.”
