Hong Kong man who died after ramming car in Lam Tin may have passed out behind wheel

A 52-year-old motorist who died after slamming into another vehicle in Lam Tin on Friday may have passed out at the wheel before the accident, a police source said.

The driver, surnamed Yip, was driving on Lin Tak Road towards Sau Mau Ping when the accident happened at around 7am.

When he reached the entrance of Mei Tin Estate, his car rammed into the back of the other vehicle, according to police. Both vehicle suffered minor damage.

A police source said Yip suffered no obvious injuries but was found unconscious in the car, adding that it was possible the driver had passed out before the collision.

Yip was taken to United Christian Hospital in Kwun Tong, where he was declared dead shortly before 8.30am. The other driver, also 52 years old, was unhurt.

Officers from the Kowloon East traffic unit were assigned to handle the case. Police asked witnesses or anyone with information on the accident to call 2305 7500 or 2305 7570.

Separately, a man was knocked unconscious by a KMB vehicle in Hang Chi Street, Ma On Shan at 2.40pm. He was taken to nearby Prince of Wales Hospital for treatment.

The latest police statistics showed that 55 people died in 54 fatal traffic accidents across the city in the first seven months of 2019.
