A pet dog in central China filmed reacting in shock when it feels its pregnant owner’s baby kicking in the womb has trended on mainland social media.

The border collie from Hubei province has been with its owners for two years and has been particularly clingy during its owner’s pregnancy.

In a video taken on Monday, the dog can be seen approaching its owner’s stomach and tilting its head to feel the baby moving inside.

The woman’s husband, surnamed Zhang, said the baby’s movements were particularly strong the day he took the video, and their dog could feel the baby kicking through his wife’s belly and thick winter clothing.

The video quickly became a popular item online, receiving 3.5 million views on Weibo at the time of writing.

One social media user joked that the dog might be thinking: “Are you only having one baby at a time?”

Boy throws birthday party for rescue dog

A little boy in Shenzhen in southern China saved his pocket money to give his pet rescue puppy a party for its first birthday on New Year’s Day in a trending video viewed by more than 370,000 people.

The stray dog was rescued by the boy and his father after they found it when it was a small puppy in a car park last year. They were told by a vet it was around three months old at the time. Unsure of the dog’s exact date of birth, the boy chose New Year’s Day for its birthday.

To mark the occasion this week, the boy used 100 yuan (US$14.50) he had saved up to buy a burger, a tiger-shaped cake, fried chicken nuggets and a birthday hat for the dog to wear for the birthday celebration.

The party was filmed by the boy’s father and shared widely on social media, with many people expressing delight and best wishes for the boy and his dog.

One viewer said: “It is the encounter of two angelic ‘children’ and the world is a better place because of you.”

Cat watches fireworks

A video of a kitten watching a New Year’s Eve firework show in northeastern China while being held up to a window prompted many people to share their own cat stories.

The kitten’s owner said she noticed the feline staring intently out a window and realised it was interested in the fireworks, so she asked her grandfather to hold the kitten up for a better view.

Social media users who saw the kitten video shared their own stories of curious cats in the comments after the video went viral. Photo: Weibo

In the video, posted on Weibo and viewed by 700,000 people, her grandfather can be seen smiling as he holds the kitten up to the window for it to watch the fireworks.

Many of the comments on the video were from people who’d had similar experiences with their own cats.

One person commented that the cat “had seen the big, big world”.

Another more sentimental commenter said: “I’m watching this like I’m watching my own childhood.”
