A family in China created a frenzy when they threw 20,000 yuan (US$3,000) in banknotes off a balcony to their relatives and friends who were waiting below to mark the birthday of their 16-year-old child.

A viral video of the cash grab, which occurred in Anhui province in eastern China, showed the unidentified family throwing cash from the balcony of their village house with a voice-over from a relative, surnamed Yang, Shangyou News reported.

Yang said in the video that the family had invited dozens of people, including relatives, friends, and acquaintances to the birthday.

In the video, family members are seen standing around the guardrails of a first-floor terrace. They then open plastic bags filled with rolls of hundred yuan bills and throw them down to the guests gathered on the ground below.

Yang said she was surprised by the madness that accompanied the money-throwing and didn’t join it because she had just had surgery and feared she would be injured by the money-mad mob.

“Everyone is crazy,” Yang said in the video.

However, it was not the first time for the family to throw away cash, Yang said they had done it before as a way of sharing their good fortune, but added: “It’s not a local cultural custom.”

The story started a debate on mainland social media, with many criticising the family for not “showing a respectful manner”.

One person said: “I believe the family is showing off their wealth.”

Another person asked: “What if a tragic stampede broke out?”

However, some complimented the generosity of the family.

One person wrote: “The family is so kind.”

Another asked jokingly: “Where is the family living? I want to be their neighbour.”
