Donald Trump’s lawyer Ty Cobb to be replaced by lawyer who helped Bill Clinton through his impeachment

Ty Cobb, the White House lawyer handling the investigation into possible collusion between US President Donald Trump’s campaign and Russia, is stepping down at the end of the month, according to the administration.
Cobb, 67, will be replaced by Emmet Flood, a veteran lawyer who represented then-President Bill Clinton during the impeachment process, according to The New York Times.
“For several weeks Ty Cobb has been discussing his retirement, and last week he let Chief of Staff (John) Kelly know he would retire at the end of this month,” White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement on Wednesday.
The switch is the latest change on a Trump legal team that has been defined by upheaval. Last month, former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani joined the group of lawyers outside the White House after the former head of that team, John Dowd, quit amid disagreements about strategy.
Flood also served as a White House lawyer during the administration of US President George W. Bush, and has privately represented Dick Cheney, who was Bush’s vice-president. Trump’s outside team has also added lawyers Jane Serene Raskin and Marty Raskin in recent weeks.
Speaking to ABC News earlier on Wednesday, Cobb said that an interview between Trump and special counsel Robert Mueller was “certainly not off the table” and that “people are working hard to make decisions and work towards an interview”.
Cobb made the remarks on ABC’s “Powerhouse Politics” podcast, adding that “assuming [discussions] can be concluded favourably, there'll be an interview.
“Assuming it can't be… assuming an agreement can't be reached, you know then it’ll go a different route.”
That different route could mean Trump being subpoenaed to appear before a grand jury – which would mean he would not have his lawyer on hand to help advise.
