IKA turns R&D visions into reality

Erhard Eble, vice-president, IKA Group

Research and development (R&D) has evolved from being an expensive strategy afforded only by the biggest industry players to a necessity for every business. Whether it is developing a cure for a rare disease or finding ways to mine coal more sustainably, R&D transforms visions into reality.

"Staying ahead of the industry means relentlessly investing time and money in new technologies and equipment," says Erhard Eble, vice-president of IKA Group. "This holds true for any company, especially for IKA, providing solutions for scientists to achieve their R&D aspirations."

IKA has been turning ideas into viable solutions for Procter & Gamble, Bayer, BASF and other clients in the food, chemical, pharmaceutical, mining and power generation industries since 1910. Focusing on simple and customised designs backed by German engineering, it provides laboratory and processing equipment. Laboratory equipment includes mixers and stirrers, immersion circulators, water baths, chillers, rotary evaporators, calorimeters and analytic software.

Breakthroughs include the world's first disposable grinding system for safe and precise milling results. Winner of the 2013 Red Dot Design Award, it spins at up to 25,000rpm. It is a highly versatile milling device suitable for the food, pharmaceutical, cosmetics, bio, renewable energy, chemical and medical industries.

These, among other IKA innovations, are the results of R&D efforts made in collaboration with institutes, universities and customers globally. From its Staufen headquarters, IKA reaches clients and partners through eight subsidiaries and production facilities in Germany, the United States, China, India, Brazil and Malaysia. It has also opened additional offices in Southeast Asia and on the mainland, where it aims to broaden its presence.

"China and Southeast Asia are the world's growth engines," Eble says. "As an early mover and trendsetter in the region, we look forward to bringing in more German and other world-class technologies - another vision that is increasingly turning into reality, thanks to R&D and IKA."
