California chic: H.D. Buttercup opens flagship furniture store at Horizon Plaza in Hong Kong

Furniture retailer’s new outlet features globally-sourced pieces, curated in Los Angeles, which lend a touch of ‘Golden State’ glamour to the home

H.D. Buttercup brings a touch of California chic to Hong Kong.

Having celebrated its grand opening in March, H.D. Buttercup is one of the latest additions to Horizon Plaza.

CEO and founder Evan Cole has brought one of California’s most beloved furniture retailers to Hong Kong, the brand’s first location outside the Golden State.

“Already a landmark destination for design-loving Californians, H.D. Buttercup is excited to bring our unparalleled offering to Hong Kong,” Cole says. The brand’s newest outlet, in the 15,000 sq ft flagship showroom, houses a collection which includes a wide variety of globally sourced furniture, floor coverings and accessories – featuring pieces curated in Los Angeles.

According to H.D. Buttercup, its curated collection comprises five “approachable, complementary” furniture categories: California Coastal, Family Style, Luxe Living, Mid-Century Modern, and Loft Living.

The shop’s launch is spearheaded by a spring collection that includes minimalist geometric chairs by Midj’s Beatriz Sempre, and handmade pieces by Jason Chauncey’s Community Manufacturing that are exclusive to the brand. The showroom also carries designs by “manutailers” – manufacturers which sell directly to the public, leaving out the middlemen – Timothy Oulton and Sonder Living.

“Bold”, “effortless” and “seamless” are some of the key words used by the brand, whether discussing furniture for the home or for the office.

H.D. Buttercup’s idea of a perfect, cosy apartment is one that has just one iconic piece, the Midj Appelle P armchair, for example – a minimalist, contemporary chair which comes in a range of materials, from masculine dark chrome, to nudes framed in gold. “The minimalist design ensures that the impression of roominess is preserved,” the brand explains.

Hongkongers often favour designs that open up space. Lofts are frequently referenced for their open plan, spacious concepts. The industrial loft look has also become very popular in recent years. H.D. Buttercup’s latest Loft Living category promises to create that industrial impression.

How about adding a handmade chair to your collection as a centrepiece? The Tetrad Ellington chair is a hand-rubbed, full grain, coffee-shade leather seat with hand-hammered brass that can apparently withstand Hong Kong’s high humidity levels.

If a client is lost for ideas, H.D. Buttercup’s in-house design consultants are ready to help them bring a touch of uniqueness to their homes.
