Festive cheer with chef Gordon Ramsay and and Hong Kong's style icon Bonnae Gokson

Celebrities share what Christmas time means to them, along with some special memories

Gordon Ramsay

Restaurateur and television personality Gordon Ramsay opened his first eatery in Hong Kong, Bread Street Kitchen and Bar in Lan Kwai Fong, two years ago, bringing his style of British fare in a relaxed setting to the local restaurant scene. He followed that with gastropub London House, which he opened in Tsim Sha Tsui East. We asked him how he would describe himself…

In three words ... I am a husband, father and focused.

Christmas to me means ... time off. Food, family and a much needed rest.

My favourite place to spend Christmas … will be our new house in Rock, Cornwall, surrounded by family. Cooking together, walking on windy beaches with the dogs, spending relaxing time together as a family.

My favourite memory … was when the children were smaller and the whole magic of little people believing in Father Christmas. Leaving out mince pies, carrots and milk for Father Christmas and the reindeers. Then Tana and I whispering – tip-toeing around the house getting their stockings ready and laying out the presents, hoping they wouldn’t wake up. Truly magical.

My signature Christmas dish is … a salmon Wellington – delish, lighter alternative to beef. After all the turkey and gutsy meat dishes over the Christmas meal times, it makes a welcome change.

In 2017 … I would like to take more time off. Spend more time with Tana and the family and more time in our new home in Cornwall. I love working, my job is incredible. However, it’s really important to be able to stop, switch off and unwind.

The creative force behind one of Hong Kong's hippest eateries, Sevva and C'est La B and Ms B's Cakery, style icon Bonnae Gokson has also authored Butterflies and All Things Sweet, which won several awards.

To me, Christmas means … love, lots of sharing and reminding us all, the story of Jesus Christ. It is the best time of the year for me as I have enjoyed wonderful times of this festivity since a child. We had beautiful and large gatherings at home, lots of presents, home-made Christmas puddings and going to midnight mass.

This Christmas, my wish list includes … more carefree travels with my friends and family in the coming year and my secret wish to come true to fruition.

For my loved ones, I wish … them continuous happiness with good health in mind and body always.

My favourite place to spend the holiday is … New York. I’ve got wonderful friends there and the city is filled with such a fabulous spirit always.

My favourite Christmas memory is … growing up in our beautiful home in Stanley. Garden grounds were large with a fountain and we had our private staircase down to the beach. The excitement of preparing Christmas puddings with our maids way before it, and our main foyer for receiving guests would be decked up. The beautiful fresh scents of Christmas trees and so many presents for so many people. That’s probably why I love Christmas so much nowadays, because of these fabulous experiences in childhood.

My signature holiday dish is … bread and butter pudding with figs and currants.

My New Year’s resolution is … more exercise and keeping positive for all wonderful things to follow.
