Hong Kong long jumper Chan Ming-tai well short of his best as he misses Rio final
The 21-year-old produced a best effort of 7.79 metres, six centimetres short of a spot in the final and well behind his jump of 8.12m in Hong Kong in May

Hong Kong’s Chan Ming-tai missed out on qualifying for the men’s long jump final at the Rio Olympics, falling short by six centimetres.
The 21-year-old soared to 7.79 metres in his first jump, which turned out to be his best effort at the Olympic Stadium. He followed up with attempts of 7.76m and 7.42m.

Only the 12 best jumps qualify for the final with Jamaica’s Damar Forbes’ 7.85 claiming the last place. China’s Wang Jianan had the longest jump of 8.24m, on his first and only attempt, followed by American Jeff Henderson with 8.20m and Emiliano Lasa, of Uruguay, with 8.14m.

“I got a bit tight because I really wanted to nail that last jump,” said Chan, who set a Hong Kong record 8.12 in May at the Hong Kong Championships.
“I really want to consistently jump more than eight metres.”
In badminton, Hong Kong’s Hu Yun, the 10th seed, cruised to victory in his opening group D match by beating Brunei’s Jaspar Yu Woon Chai 21-16, 21-15.
Hu next faces Spain’s Pablo Abian for a place in the next round.
