Eight-year doping ban for Chinese marathon champion Wang Jiali

Chinese marathon champion Wang Jiali has been handed an eight-year ban by authorities for a second doping violation.

Wang, who won the first gold medal at the 2017 China National Games, tested positive for peptide hormones during an out-of-competition test by the Chinese Athletic Association in August.

The 31-year-old runner from Hebei province was first banned for two years in 2012 after abnormalities were found in her biological passport.

Wang, who also represented China at the 2012 London Olympic Games where she finished 57th, was ordered to pay 40,000 yuan in fees for the testing of 40 samples.

The suspension, which runs until 2025, is likely to end her career.

Her coach Lu Qiang was banned for life by the CAA and will have to pay a testing fee of 80,000 yuan.

The Hebei Athletics Association, of which Wang is a member, received a warning and a testing fee of 40,000 yuan.

A statement by the governing body did not mention if it would strip Wang of the National Games gold medal she won in April before the main events of the Games started in August.

Wang’s testing sample was collected on August 9 before a hearing was called at her request three months later.

The statement said Wang could not explain why the substance was found in her sample, nor give any reason for unintentional use.

Wang also won the 2010 Beijing International Marathon and a year later was a member of the Chinese women’s team which came second at the 2011 World Championships in Daegu, South Korea where she also secured an individual finish of eighth.
