Jeremy Lin has opened up on his time in the Chinese Basketball Association with the Beijing Ducks and the crippling fear that he would be rejected in the CBA just as he had been in the NBA.
“Going in I had such a determined mindset and I had such a killer intention, but I was so damaged and I carried so much emotional baggage that even though my intention was to do amazing things, I had such a fearful mindset,” Lin said in a monologue on Taiwan’s GOOD TV on Saturday, reminiscing on his move to Beijing after no NBA teams offered him a contract.
Lin, who has decided to try again in the NBA after a season in China, was a success during his time with the Ducks, taking them to the CBA semi-finals. However, he said he was crippled by fear during the first half of the season.
“Looking on paper at the season that came and went, I was an All-Star and there are many things that went my way and positive things that happened, but at the end of the day I still struggled with so much fear this past season.

“It was so bad. The opening game was an away game and I was in the hotel, I woke up from my pregame nap and I remember I stood up and I was going to go to the bathroom and I remember all of a sudden I had no energy in my body. I became weak. I just stumbled and I fell back on to the bed and I just crawled up in a fetal position and I just lay there for a couple of minutes because of the anxiety.
“It was getting to me so badly and I was so nervous for the game. Even during some of the games that I played there were so many times where it felt like I had no confidence. Things could be going great, we might have a 15-point lead but all of a sudden these thoughts would come in.


Even when I was hot, I would hit a few three-pointers in a row and then I’d be like, ‘oh, well the next one’s probably not going to go in because I hit so many in a row’.
I found myself just apologising for everything, just trying to be such a people-pleaser. If a team scored and I was anywhere near the player I would immediately go to the coach [and put my hands up] ‘My bad, my bad, I should have been there, I should have done something’.
“I remember one game I had a great game but we lost and one of my teammates had a rough game. I remember going up to him at the back of the bus like, ‘Hey that’s my bad. I should have found a way to get you to play better tonight.’ I just started apologising for everything, taking blame for all these things and I was just so filled with fear.

“Even after the games I would immediately go on my phone and start comparing to everybody else. I could have had a great game and we won, but I look at the box score of some other game and I was like why couldn’t I have had as many assists as this player or this team’s ahead of us in the rankings.
“Everything came to a peak in January because the way the CBA works is that our team had three foreigners and you can only register two foreigners at a time to play. Because our team lost a lot of our big men to injuries, I had to get rotated out.
“This was when I had to come face to face with my greatest fear as a basketball player: that I would lose it all, completely unwanted and unneeded. Coming off of last summer where I had zero contract offers and I had that feeling where I lost my entire dream and I am completely unwanted, I start to spiral.

“If I get rotated out and they play really well they might not need me and they might not let me get back into the rotation and then maybe Beijing won’t want me as a basketball player any more and then I won’t even be able to play in the CBA because the CBA won’t even want me and then my fans will stop supporting me. I started to think all of these really, really negative thoughts.
“This is nothing compared to a lot of the situations that you guys are going through in real life. I’m not trying to draw that comparison, but as a basketball player my greatest fear is that I would fail at the highest level and that everything I had worked so hard for, I would lose it all.
“One of my teammates texted me that night. He said to me: ‘I just met you this season but when I would watch you play during Linsanity, during New York times, I would only watch through the screen but even through the screen I could see this fearlessness in your eyes, but through the first 30 games of [this] season I would see so much fear in you.’

“It was at that point where I was like, you know what, this stops today. I’m going to wage war on fear. This fear is crippling me, it’s overtaking me and I must fight it.
“It was such a contrast. I remember this one game and it was the end of the game and the other team had the ball. I found myself thinking, ‘oh, well if they hit this shot and we don’t have any time left we’re gonna lose, but at least I don’t have to take the last shot. Because if I take the last shot and I miss, I don’t know if I can handle that’. I was literally unrecognisable to myself. I’m a player that has never shied away from those moments, I’ve always wanted the ball in my hands at the end of games.”
Lin said this came when Covid hit and the CBA season was postponed for five months. He was in the US for two of those five months where he talked out his fears and limiting beliefs, regaining his confidence. “This was the first time that I really attacked fear,” Lin said.

When the CBA returned, Lin led the Ducks to the play-offs by finishing third in the regular season with an 11-game winning streak. Lin took Beijing’s last shot of the season with an attempted buzzer-beating three-pointer that would have taken the deciding game of the CBA play-off semi-finals against the Guangdong Southern Tigers.
