Chinese table tennis star Wang Chuqin was furious with the organisers at the ITTF World Table Tennis Championships in Doha after his bat was damaged before a mixed doubles match on Monday.
The world No 2 men’s player and his teammate Sun Yingsha were set to face Brazilian pair Bruna Takahashi and Hugo Calderano in the second round when Wang noticed visible creases and cracks at the top of the rubber.
He and coach Xiao Zhan protested at the state of the bat but they were told it was in good enough condition for the match to go ahead. Wang had to switch to his backup bat.
The Chinese duo still eased to a 3-0 victory, and earned a bye to the quarter-finals after their next opponents, the Romanian pair Ovidiu Ionescu and Elizabeta Samara, withdrew, citing an injury for the latter.
“I have no idea why these things always happen to me,” Wang said. “I felt something was wrong with the sponge the moment I stepped onto the court.
“The sponge opened halfway but it was fine before the test, and it couldn’t be used for the match. I am very disappointed with the organisation and the referees – they couldn’t even inspect the bats properly.”

This was not the first time Wang had suffered issues with his equipment at major events.
At the Paris Olympics last year, Wang’s bat was broken when a photographer accidentally stepped on it following his gold medal success in the mixed doubles.
The following day, he was forced to use his backup bat for his singles match against Sweden’s Truls Moregardh.
“I didn’t say much the last time [but] it always happens to me during the major tournaments,” Wang said. “The bat is an athlete’s most trusted weapon. I hope they take good care of it during inspection, because the sponge can break easily.”
A meeting was held on Monday between the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) and the Chinese Table Tennis Association (CTTA) to address the incident. The CTTA requested that bats be stored more safely and that a member of team staff watch the inspection process to ensure no unauthorised personnel came into contact with the bats.
The ITTF later issued a statement agreeing to the request. It said that organisers should provide A4-sized envelopes to store the bats and urged all referees to handle them with care during the process.
The sport’s world governing body did not grant the Chinese officials’ request to record the inspection process in full, saying it was not possible at present, though they would be willing to implement changes gradually in future competitions.
But the ITTF said it would continue to investigate the cause of the bat damage and prepare a written report on the incident.
On the table on Tuesday, Hongkongers Wong Chun-ting and Doo Hoi-kem beat Brazilian pair Guilherme Teodoro and Giulia Takahashi 3-1 to set up a mixed-doubles quarter-final clash with Spanish duo Alvaro Robles and Maria Xiao. A win over the No 7 seeds will see the local stars secure their fourth world championship medal, at least.
Tournament top seeds Lin Shidong and Kuai Man were also through to the last eight and will face off with Maharu Yoshimura and Satsuki Odo of Japan. Second seeds Wang and Sun will face another Japanese pair, Sora Matsushima and Miwa Harimoto, for a spot in the semi-finals.
