Qin Haiyang took a step towards winning back his 200 metres breaststroke world title with a commanding showing at the Chinese National Swimming Championships in Shenzhen on Thursday.
Qin came first in two minutes and 7.57 seconds, more than two seconds faster than current world champion Dong Zhihao, who finished in 2:09.98. Third was Yu Zongda in 2:11.99.
The event in Shenzhen is China’s sole qualifying meet for the World Aquatics Championships in July and August. Only the two fastest swimmers from each event to meet the A qualifying time will be considered for selection.
Qin became world champion at the 2023 global championships in Fukuoka, setting the current world record time of 2:05.48. However, his performances in the event since then had significantly stagnated. He lost the world crown to compatriot Dong a year later in Doha.

At last year’s Olympics, despite heading to Paris with the fastest qualifying time, Qin was 0.18 seconds away from not making it through the heats. He then failed to progress from the semi-final.
In March, the 26-year-old started working with Australian swimming coach Michael Bohl, who previously worked with six-time Olympic gold medallist Emma McKeon.
Also in Shenzhen on Thursday, in the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay, the Zhejiang provincial team made up of superstars Wang Shun, Fei Liwei, Sun Yang and Pan Zhanle dominated proceedings, coming first in 7:12.76.
Trailing almost four seconds behind were Shandong province’s swimmers, who finished in 7:16.10. In third place were Gongan Sports Association in 7:16.35.
In the women’s 100m freestyle final, Wu Qingfeng, who was part of both Chinese relay teams to win bronze in Paris, came first in 53.27. She was followed closely by Cheng Yujie in 53.35. Yu Yiting rounded off the podium in 54.31 for third.
On Wednesday, Siobhan Haughey was finally beaten at the Mare Nostrum Swim Tour in Barcelona, but Hong Kong won two medals in a day for the second time at this edition as she and Ian Ho Yentou bagged silvers.
Haughey came second in the women’s 100 metres freestyle final on Wednesday behind 20-year-old Dutch swimmer Milou van Wijk. The Hongkonger clocked 53.88 seconds, which was 0.32 seconds slower than Van Wijk’s 53.56 and reversed their positions from the first leg in Monaco last Sunday.
Third was Haughey’s training partner, Czech swimmer Barbora Seemanova, who finished in 54.25.
It represented a rare pause in Haughey’s dominance of the tour, albeit at an early stage in her comeback from a four-month break. She was the overall women’s winner of the past two Mare Nostrums, sweeping both the 100m and 200m freestyle in both years.
In the men’s 50m freestyle, Ho, Haughey’s fellow Olympian, punched the wall in 22.15 seconds to pick up his first medal of the three-leg event.
He was second to Egypt’s Abdelrahman Elaraby’s time of 21.94. Two swimmers tied for third, as Spain’s Sergio de Celis and Piotr Ludwiczak from Poland both finished in 22.48.
It gave Hong Kong a second podium place after similar success in Monaco on Saturday, when Haughey took gold in the 200m freestyle final and Adam Chillingworth claimed silver in the 200m breaststroke.
Haughey was expected to race again later on Thursday in the 200m freestyle, before the tour moves on to Canet-en-Roussillon in the south of France at the weekend.
