FC Seoul’s sex dolls see K League hand out record fine, matching 2016 bribery punishment

Officials in South Korea’s K League have acted swiftly in punishing FC Seoul for the club’s use of sex dolls in the standsat last weekend’s game behind closed doors against Gwangju.
The league has responded by handing the side a record 100 million won (US$81,500) fine for what they called a “serious mistake” at the league game at the Seoul World Cup Stadium.
“The disciplinary committee decided to take heavy disciplinary action considering the graveness of the incident that has greatly insulted and hurt female and family fans and to prevent similar incidents going forward,” officials said in a statement.
South Korean football observers have pointed out that the fine matches that handed to Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in 2016 for bribing referees. The Jeonbuk club were also docked nine points in that ruling.
With the K League the first high-profile league to return to action two weeks ago and only joined by Germany’s Bundesliga last weekend, there is unprecedented attention on the league, which may have contributed to the record fine. The sex dolls were reported globally and went viral on social media.
The club apologised for its failed attempts to create an atmosphere. “We would like to apologise to our fans,” they wrote on Instagram.
“We’re genuinely sorry to our fans about the installation of the mannequins at our game on May 17.”
FC Seoul claimed there was a mix-up with the manufacturers and they received sex dolls rather than the mannequins they had requested.
The club play away in their next game, travelling to Pohang Steelers on Friday night.
