Eastern win Senior Shield, Everton Camargo MVP, treble depends on Kitchee

Eastern Long Lions kept their hopes of a domestic treble on track with a win over Lee Man in the Senior Shield at Mong Kok Stadium on Friday, their second trophy of the week after lifting the FA Cup with a win over R&F on Monday.

While fans were kept out as part of the Hong Kong Football Association’s measures to control the coronavirus pandemic and finish the disrupted season, supporters from both sides gathered outside the ground to cheer on their teams.

It was Lee Man’s who had more to cheer in the early stages of a game played in unseasonably hot weather, with players looking fatigued by the first water break halfway through the first half.

By then Lee Man could and perhaps should have been a goal to the good but a combination of poor finishing and decision making meant it was 0-0 as it stayed until the halftime whistle, with clear-cut chances at a premium.

The deadlock should have been broken by Lee Man just before that as Brazilian winger Martins Givanilton fashioned himself a chance after beating the Eastern defence but goalkeeper Yapp Hung-fai stood up to it.

Almost immediately Eastern went up the other end and opened the scoring with Chen Hao-wei slotting home an inch perfect Everton Camargo cross.

Everton then got on the score sheet, as he usually does in Senior Shield finals, to make it 2-0 with three minutes to go. The Brazilian could have finished with a hat-trick and was named the game’s MVP. Lee Man’s Serhii Shapoval picked up a second booking in stoppage time.

Eastern’s players applauded the fans after the final whistle and both could have more to celebrate this season although Hong Kong Premier League title hopes rest on Kitchee, who are a point ahead with two games left.

Both sides still have to play Happy Valley, with Eastern playing them in the next round on Tuesday. Kitchee can extend their lead at the top with win over KC Southern tomorrow.

The final round of games on October 11 will be played at the same time – Kitchee take on Happy Valley with Eastern playing R&F.

Kitchee went top after a dramatic 3-2 win over R&F on Thursday.
