Just to prove that Cole Palmer’s cold streak is not limited to games against good teams, he failed to score against Southampton on Tuesday, a side with the most obliging of defences.
Still, at least his teammates knew where the goal was. A 4-0 thrashing of Southampton got the Chelsea bandwagon rolling again.
In fact, there were goals galore across the football spectrum overnight, so, here’s a quick look at what happened while you were sleeping.
Normal service (almost) resumed
It has not been a great 2025 so far for Chelsea, but playing Southampton is always likely to raise any team’s spirits, and Enzo Maresca side moved into the Premier League top four with a comfortable win at Stamford Bridge.

Christopher Nkunku, Pedro Neto and Levi Colwill all scored in the first half to ensure Chelsea ended a run of three consecutive defeats, while Marc Cucurella rounded things off 12 minutes from time.
Palmer, who now hasn’t scored in seven games, meanwhile conspired to waste a host of chances, the best of which came midway through the first half when he was played clean through one-on-one with Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale. He delayed and delayed and then shot too close to Ramsdale, who parried the effort away.
“We needed that, the fans needed that and the club needed that so we are happy,” Maresca said.
Happy birthday to me
Ismaila Sarr scored twice on his 27th birthday and Crystal Palace put a dent in Aston Villa’s hopes of Champions League football next season with a 4-1 win at Selhurst Park.
Villa beat Chelsea at the weekend, but have won just once in their past seven league games and never looked like doing anything other than losing, despite briefly levelling matters in the second half when Morgan Rogers cancelled out Sarr’s opener.
Palace, though, dominated the chances as they secured just a third home win of the campaign, with in-form striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and Eddie Nketiah also on target in a performance that was full of attacking threat.
Villa dropped to 10th place in the league, while Palace climbed to 12th.
Yeah, whatever
Make all the jokes you want about the Scottish Premiership, and there are so many to be made about that two-team competition, but Celtic’s dominance is far from funny for the rest.
Daizen Maeda scored twice, to take his tally to 25 for the season, as Brendan Rodgers side bounced back from a rare league defeat to thrash third-placed Aberdeen 5-1.
Jota, Callum McGregor and Yang Hyun-Jun were also on target for Celtic, who are now 16 points clear of Rangers – the other team that matters, or not, as has been the case this season.
“It’s one of the great traits of this team, that resilience they have to bounce back when we slip,” Rodgers said. “The response has been very, very good. That’s a mark of the mentality of the team.”
Match of the day
And then there was the most ridiculous game of the day, with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid both rallying from two goals down in a frantic 4-4 draw in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-finals at Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys.
Atletico scored twice in the first six minutes through Julian Alvarez and Antoine Griezmann, before conceding four unanswered goals to Pedri, Pau Cubarsi, Inigo Martinez and, finally Robert Lewandowski in the 74th minute.
But Diego Simeone’s side levelled things with goals in the final 10 minutes, including the equaliser by substitute Alexander Sorloth three minutes into stoppage time.
“It’s the worst result after we were up 4-2,” Pedri said. “It had already happened in the league and again now. We have to be more careful, we have to learn to keep it from happening.”
Atletico had beaten Barcelona 2-1 in Barcelona in the Spanish league when the teams last met in December, with Sorloth scoring the winning six minutes into stoppage time.
“We never give up,” Alvarez said. “We always keep our heads up, believing that we can come back. That’s what we always do. We played a great match but there are still 90 minutes left.”
