Up and running: Hong Kong record convincing win over Taiwan in Asian Netball Championship opener

Hong Kong made the ideal start to their Asian Netball Championship campaign on Monday with a convincing 59-11 win over Taiwan in group A in Bangkok.

Robin Manihera’s side opened up a 15-3 lead after the first quarter at the National Stadium before moving into a commanding 32-4 half-time lead.

And after outscoring fifth seeds Taiwan 11-4 in the third quarter, fourth ranked Hong Kong sealed the win ahead of Tuesday’s meeting with the Maldives who lost 69-19 to hosts Thailand on Sunday.

“We had a competent start to the championship with a convincing win over Taiwan. They play an unconventional style of netball so it was important we settled into our own game early and not get caught up with their play,” said Hong Kong captain Jessica McCauley.

“We were fortunate to get all our players on court including our Hong Kong debutants, Elise Daly, Victoria Smith, Kate Jolly, Serene Lim and Anna Pinder, and we are looking forward to our next game against the Maldives.”

Hong Kong face their sternest test on Wednesday as Manihera’s side take on two-time defending champions and number one seed Singapore, who beat Taiwan 57-14 on Sunday before recording a hard-fought 49-28 victory over Thailand on Monday.
