Hong Kong’s Sarah Lee Wai-sze sounds warning at Cycling World Championships
Local favourite clocks 10.764 seconds to beat Laurine van Riessen of the Netherlands to reach the quarter-finals of the women’s sprint at Tseung Kwan O Velodrome on Thursday

Hong Kong’s Sarah Lee Wai-sze sounded an early warning to her rivals at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships by clocking the second-best time of her career in easing through to the women’s sprint quarter-finals on Thursday.
Lee clocked 10.764 seconds to beat Laurine van Riessen of the Netherlands in the Round of 16 to finish second on the timesheets on the second day at Tseung Kwan O Velodrome.
Her best time of 10.67 seconds was achieved at altitude in Mexico in 2013, while Lee only clocked 10.8 seconds at the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games last year.
The top four finishers in the qualifiers were given a bye into the round of 16, including reigning Olympic champion Kristina Vogel of Germany, Stephanie Morton of Australia and Mathilde Gros of France.
Youngster Vivian Ma Wing-yu, however, failed to reach the round of 16 after clocking 11.832 seconds to finish in last place overall.
