Hong Kong Olympian Tiffany Chan Tsz-ching made an encouraging start to her life as a professional in the US after carding a two-under-par first round at the Decatur-Forsyth Classic in Illinois.

The 23-year-old posted four birdies on her debut on the second-tier Symetra Tour at the 6,793-yard Hickory Point Golf Course in Decatur, some 300 kilometres south of Chicago, to sit tied for 24th after 18 holes.

Chan started with an opening bogey, but as in last week’s EFG Hong Kong Ladies Open, the recent University of Southern California graduate steadied her round and after a run of pars, two birdies in three holes around the turn erased the damage.

Another dropped shot midway through the front nine, having started from the 10th tee, took Chan back to level par before another run of two birdies in three holes saw the former amateur move back up the leaderboard.

American Lindsey Weaver carded a opening round of seven-under-par 65 to lead the way after the first round, with England’s Charlotte Thomas, Thailand’s Chorphaka Jaengkit and American Erynne Lee a further shot off the pace.
