China’s unstoppable machine came to a spluttering halt after they were shocked by Italy in their last game of the Hong Kong leg of the Volleyball Nations League at the Coliseum on Thursday night.

A capacity crowd had been hoping to watch the Rio Olympic champions notch their third straight victory after easy victories over Argentina and Japan, but they were left disappointed as the Italians scored an upset 3-1 (25-18, 25-14, 16-25, 25-16) victory.

Even with China captain Zhu Ting, who scored eight points and has been in immaculate form, the world No 1 ranked team played below expectations as Italy dominated China in all departments in an extraordinary performance that surprised the partisan crowd. Japan beat Argentina 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-21) in an earlier game.
