‘Korean Zombie’ blasts UFC over latest rankings; thinks he should be No 2
- Jung Chan-sung is not happy being placed behind Brian Ortega and Zabit Magomedsharipov in the rankings
- ‘This ain’t a voting system for popularity,’ says Jung, who wants a title shot against Alexander Volkanovski
“The Korean Zombie” Jung Chan-sung was pretty sure he’d done enough to earn a crack at featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski with his first-round TKO of Frankie Edgar at UFC Busan.
But the latest UFC rankings could mean he has to wait a little longer for another title shot.
Jung is placed at No 4 in the division, behind former champion Max Holloway (21-5), Brian Ortega (14-1) – whom he was originally set to fight last weekend, before injury struck – and Zabit Magomedsharipov (18-1).
The “Zombie” wasn’t happy about it, either.
“One gained victory over an 11th ranker, and another hadn’t fought in 13 months. This ain’t a voting system for popularity I’m number 2,” he wrote in an Instagram post, alongside a picture of the rankings.
Magomedsharipov secured a unanimous decision victory over Calvin Kattar in Russia last month, and Ortega’s last appearance came in a December 2018 defeat to then-champion Max Holloway.
Jung called out the newly-minted champion Volkanovski in the Octagon after his dominant victory against former lightweight champion and late replacement Edgar on home soil last week.
“I want Volkanovski,” he said, simply.
