ONE Championship: Giorgio Petrosyan’s camp accuses Superbon of disrespect for celebrating vicious KO

  • Italian’s gym hits out at ONE featherweight kickboxing champ for wildly cheering after knocking Petrosyan out cold

Giorgio Petrosyan’s camp have blasted new ONE Championship featherweight kickboxing champ Superbon Banchamek for celebrating his vicious knockout win on Friday night in Singapore.

The 31-year-old Thai knocked “The Doctor” out cold – and broke his jaw – with a roundhouse head kick early in the second round, stunning the world of combat sports with one of the most shocking fight finishes of all time.

Superbon performed a few victory laps around the Circle, cheering wildly after securing the upset of all upsets against the man widely-considered kickboxing’s “GOAT” (greatest of all time).

“Superbon Banchamek celebrates without caring that Giorgio has passed out on the ground, forcing the referee to tell him to stop cheering! Is he a champ?” read an Instagram post on the official account of the Team Multifight Petrosyan gym, which is based in Italy.

The social media post suggested Petrosyan is a “real champ” because he immediately went to verify Smokin’ Jo Nattawut’s condition and pray for his opponent after knocking him out in August 2019.

“Where is the honour and respect that so marks ONE from other promotions!?” added the post, which tagged the account handles of ONE Championship and its CEO, Chatri Sityodtong.

“Defeats are accepted, without problems,” it continued. “But this is not what this sport has taught us, above all it is not what it deserves! @giorgiopetrosyan he has always been synonymous with humility for all!”

The 35-year-old Armenian-born Italian Petrosyan is back home recovering after undergoing surgery in Singapore on Saturday to fix his jaw with two plates.

“The surgery went well. I feel better already. Thanks to all for the support,” Petrosyan wrote in an Instagram post from his hospital bed.

While he has not responded to the Petrosyan gym’s post, Chatri praised both fighters following the dramatic main event at Singapore Indoor Stadium.

“Fighters have the toughest job in the world,” he wrote on Instagram. “They sacrifice everything to chase their greatness for the world to witness. Fans do not truly realise how much sacrifice it takes to be a professional fighter. Fans only see the glory, glamour, and fireworks of fight night.

“The reality is that elite world championship fighters like Superbon and Giorgio endure a lifetime of dedication and sacrifice that would make 99.9 per cent of the world quit.

“They train endless hours, miss birthday parties, battle through injuries, skip social gatherings, exhaust their bodies, overcome impossible odds, maintain insane diets, conquer setbacks and losses, resist all sorts of temptations, defeat their fears and doubts, and so much more.

“In many ways, fighters live truly honourable and courageous lives. They choose to follow their hearts, live their dreams, and inspire the world. And they dare to do it all with the entire world watching their every success and failure.”
