Ahead of his promotion to Formula 1 next year, Chinese driver Zhou Guanyu signed off his 2021 Formula 2 campaign in style, with a win and a second place at the final round in Abu Dhabi to cement third place in the championship.

After finishing eighth in the weekend’s first sprint race at the Yas Marina Circuit, Zhou took his six win of the season with victory in the second sprint, before rounding off the season with a solid second place in the feature race.

Felipe Drugovich, Zhou’s UNI-Virtuosi teammate, finished third in Sunday’s feature race.

Zhou’s performance also propelled his team into second in the constructor’s championship, which he said had been one of the targets for the weekend.

“I’m really happy for the team to finish second in the championship and it’s great to see Felipe here as well,” he said. “That was one of the two targets, to finish top three and also to get the team up one more position.”

The Chinese driver also stood on the top step of the podium this season at races in Bahrain, Monaco and Silverstone.

This season’s F2 title went to Australian rookie Oscar Piastri, with Robert Shwartzman of Russia finishing ahead of Zhou in second place.

Zhou is already assured of a place in F1 next year, after signing to drive for Alfa Romeo to partner Valtteri Bottas. The Shanghai native is the only one among this year’s crop of F2 drivers to have secured an F1 race seat for 2021.
