HK's Tiffany Chan stuns pro field at Yinli Classic

Hong Kong's Tiffany Chan Tsz-ching pulled off one of the most memorable wins of her already impressive amateur career by stunning the field at the 10th Yinli HKPGA Classic, a professional tournament in Dongguan. Eighteen-year-old Chan, a product of the Hong Kong Golf Association's junior development programme, put her professional counterparts in the shade as she coasted to a two-shot victory at the Yinli Foreign Investors' Golf Club. Opening with back-to-back rounds of 69, the former Diocesan Girls' School student, who is heading to the US in January to continue her education, saw off the challenge of Taiwan's Lin Yu-pei, the leader of the Ladies Asian Golf Tour's money list, and a string of China LPGA Tour pros to take home the silverware. As an amateur, Chan was unable to accept the winner's share of the HK$600,000 prize purse, with second-placed Yu taking the cash. Alex Jenkins

Richardson dominates to qualify for HK Open

Former England international Edward Richardson grabbed a spot in next month's UBS Hong Kong Open thanks to an overwhelming 14-stroke victory in the Hong Kong Open Amateur Championship at Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club yesterday. Richardson, 44, beat Taiwan's Liu Yu-jui, with Hong Kong's Shinichi Mizuno a shot further back in third. "It all came together over the past couple of days after I started the tournament pretty badly," said Richardson, who finished second in the championship in 2007. "The aim was not to make any mistakes and give anyone else a chance, which I was able to do." Alex Jenkins

Ffree Fire wins Hainan race in record time

Sam Chan's TP52, Ffree Fire, claimed line honours in record-breaking time in the Hong Kong to Hainan Race yesterday, beating predecessor FfreeFire 71's time by 51 minutes and 14 seconds with an elapsed time of 28 hours 43 minutes and 54 seconds. "We had great wind and a great wind angle all the way, giving us another new record. It's great to be back in Hainan and without a single breakage on the boat, which topped out at 23 knots. "Champagne sailing," Chan said. Ffree fire stands a good chance of "doing the double" and winning the IRC overall title on handicap. Her nearest rivals are Jonathan Mahony's Zanzibar and Anthony Root's Red Kite II, both projecting corrected times outside the TP52's. Staff Reporter
