Disaster was narrowly averted at a Moto2 race in Aragon, Spain yesterday when a fuel tank broke free from a bike after a crash and exploded on the track engulfing several racers in flames.

The terrifying incident was caught on camera, and miraculously, nobody was seriously injured.

The incredible episode occurred during race two of the CEV Moto2 European Championship.

Andorran rider Xavi Cardelus lead a group of riders into a long turn before losing control of his bike. As his back careered across the track, his fuel tank separated and bounced into the oncoming group of racers.

One bike struck the tank causing the massive explosion.

Italian rider Jacopa Cretaro and American Michael Aquino were seen passing through the flames.

The race was won by South African Steven Odendaal of South Africa, with France’s Alan Techer second and Tetsuta Nagashima of Japan in third.

In 2011, the sport world was shocked by the high-profile death of Italian racer Marco Simoncelli.
