Outspoken basketball star Jeremy Lin suggested racial issues were a big part of the US election outcome and urged reconciliation after a highly divisive election season on Wednesday night.

The Brooklyn Nets guard made the comments on Twitter after Republican candidate Donald Trump pulled off a shock win in the US presidential election against Democratic nominee Hilary Clinton.

Lin said the election result ‘revealed how big a topic race is and how big of an issue racism still is’.

A renowned evangelical Christian, Lin later quoted a bible passage on his Twitter account: ‘In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world’.

The Asian-American has spoken out over racial issues in the past and caused a stir earlier this year when he criticised Oscars host Chris Rock over a series of jokes the comedian made about Asians during the ceremony.

The 28-year-old Lin was one of a host of American sports personalities to speak out after Trump shocked many to become the 45th President of the United States.
