Hong Kong failed to capitalise on a strong start for the second game in a row at the Nations Cup in Singapore, going down to the Cook Islands 48-33 on Monday.

In almost a carbon copy of their opening-day loss to Swaziland, Hong Kong led 12-10 at the first break before slipping one goal behind at half-time.

From there they were no match for their stronger opponents, giving up 27 goals in the second half.

“There are real positives that we can take away from the game today,” Hong Kong co-captain Kate Jolly said. “We had a game plan and we stuck to it for the first half. After the break we did it a few times but we then got caught up in what Cook Islands were doing. They were able to get the lead on us and we found it hard to get it back.”

Hosts Singapore also suffered their second consecutive loss, falling 64-51 to Swaziland, while Ireland defeated Malaysia 48-34.

Hong Kong and Singapore lock horns on Tuesday in search of their first victory.

“We’ll go back, do a bit of recovery and we’ll also have the opportunity to look at some of the things we did wrong in today’s game, we’ll address that and take that into the game tomorrow,” Jolly said.
